2.0 Core Voltage Definitions and System Rating Verification
A precise, shared understanding of voltage terminology establishes the non-negotiable foundation for any compliance audit against IEC 183. These core definitions eliminate ambiguity in component specification and system voltage correlation, preventing incorrect component selection, system incompatibility, and safety risks. Establishing and verifying these parameters is the first step in a rigorous compliance process. The key voltage definitions as outlined in Clause 2.1 of the standard are:
- U₀: The rated r.m.s. power-frequency voltage between each conductor and the screen or sheath for which the cable and its accessories are designed.
- U: The rated r.m.s. power-frequency voltage between any two conductors for which the cable and its accessories are designed.
- Um: The maximum r.m.s. power-frequency voltage between any two conductors. This represents the highest sustained voltage that can occur under normal operating conditions at any time and at any point in the system.
- Up: The peak value of the lightning impulse withstand voltage between each conductor and the screen or sheath for which the cable and its accessories are designed.
Actionable Verification Point: System Voltage Correlation
The following table is the amended TABLE I from IEC 183 and serves as the primary cross-reference for ensuring compliance. It establishes the required relationship between the cable’s rated voltage (U₀/U) and the highest voltage for the equipment (Um) to which it will be connected. This is a critical first step in the compliance verification process.
| Rated voltage of cables and accessories (U₀/U) (kV) | Highest voltage for equipment (Um) (kV) |
| 1,8/3 | 3,6 |
| 3,6/6 | 7,2 |
| 6/6 | 7,2 |
| 6/10 | 12 |
| 8,7/10 | 12 |
| 8,7/15 | 17,5 |
| 12/20 | 24 |
| 18/30 | 36 |
| 26/35 | 42 |
| 36/60; 38/66 | 72,5 |
| 64/110 | 123 |
| 76/132 | 145 |
| 87/150 | 170 |
| 127/220 | 245 |
| 160/275 | 300 |
| 190/330 | 362 |
