5. Don’t Forget the Ends: A Note on Terminations
The selection process isn’t complete once the cable is chosen. A cable is only as reliable as its terminations—the points where it connects to other equipment like transformers or switchgear. The design of these terminations is heavily influenced by the environment. The two most critical factors are:
- Atmospheric Pollution: In areas with high industrial or coastal pollution, contaminants can build up on insulators, creating a path for electricity to “flash over.” Terminations in these areas require insulators with longer leakage distances (creepage) to prevent this.
- Altitude: Air becomes less dense at high altitudes, making it a poorer insulator. To ensure safety and prevent electrical arcing, the air clearances around terminations installed above 1,000 meters must be increased.
