Glossary of Key Terms
| Term / Acronym | Definition |
| ACELP | Algebraic Code-Excited Linear Prediction. A speech coding algorithm. |
| Administration | A term used for conciseness to indicate both a telecommunication administration and a recognized operating agency. |
| Annex C+ | The specific part of the G.729 Recommendation that defines the reference floating-point implementation for integrating the G.729 main body with Annexes B, D, and E. |
| Bit-exactness | A requirement that the floating-point implementation produces identical output to the fixed-point specification on a bit-for-bit level. |
| CNG | Comfort Noise Generation. A function used during periods of silence in a conversation to generate artificial background noise, preventing the listener from thinking the line is dead. |
| Corrigendum | An official document issued to correct errors in a previously published text. |
| CS-ACELP | Conjugate Structure Algebraic Code-Excited Linear Prediction. The specific speech coding algorithm used in the G.729 standard. |
| DTX | Discontinuous Transmission. A method used in digital wireless communication to conserve power and bandwidth by turning off the transmitter when the user is not speaking. Functionality is provided by Annexes D and E. |
| Floating-point | A method of representing real numbers that can handle a wide dynamic range, as opposed to fixed-point arithmetic. Annex C+ provides a floating-point implementation. |
| IEC | International Electrotechnical Commission. An international standards organization that prepares and publishes standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies. Mentioned as a collaborative partner with ITU. |
| ISO | International Organization for Standardization. An international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. Mentioned as a collaborative partner with ITU. |
| ITU | International Telecommunication Union. The United Nations Specialized Agency in the field of telecommunications. |
| ITU-T | ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector. The permanent organ of the ITU responsible for studying technical, operating, and tariff questions and issuing Recommendations on them to standardize telecommunications worldwide. |
| LPC | Linear Predictive Coding. A method used in audio signal processing and speech processing for representing the spectral envelope of a digital signal of speech in compressed form. |
| PCM | Pulse Code Modulation. A method used to digitally represent sampled analog signals. It is the standard form of digital audio in computers and various digital audio formats. |
| SID | Silence Description. Special frames transmitted during DTX operation to inform the receiving end about the characteristics of the background noise. |
| VAD | Voice Activity Detection. A technique used in speech processing to detect the presence or absence of human speech. It is a key component of DTX. |
| WTSC | World Telecommunication Standardization Conference. A conference held by the ITU-T every four years to establish the work program and structure of the ITU-T Study Groups. |
