2. Test Methods and Definitions
The standard defines two principal test methods and two methods of application, referencing IEC 1000-4-2.
2.1. Test Methods
- Contact Discharge Method: The electrode of the test generator is held in contact with the equipment under test (EUT), and the discharge is actuated by a switch within the generator. This is the preferred method due to its higher reproducibility. It is applied to conductive surfaces.
- Air Discharge Method: The charged electrode of the generator is brought near the EUT, and the discharge is actuated by a spark to the EUT. This method is used only when the accessible surfaces of the EUT are non-conducting.
2.2. Application Methods
- Direct Application: The test is applied directly to the equipment under test.
- Indirect Application: The test is applied to a coupling plane in the vicinity of the EUT, simulating a discharge to adjacent objects. This method is noted as not being applicable to static measuring relays and protection equipment under this standard.
