Section 1: Why is This Standard Important? The Problem of Static Shock
This standard addresses a common, real-world problem: static electricity generated by people. As noted in the standard’s annexes, the human body is the primary source of electrostatic discharges. These charges are easily generated, especially in environments with dry air and synthetic fabrics.
A simple static shock from a person touching a piece of equipment might seem harmless, but it can cause a simple malfunction or even damage the sensitive electronic components inside modern protection equipment. Because this is such a common risk, the standard defines exactly what equipment needs to be tested to ensure its reliability.
